EGMF opinion on the Commission’s roadmap on future AI requirements

EGMF provided its opinion on the European Commission roadmap on a future legal act on Artificial Intelligence (AI), in the context of the consultation on this initiative.

EGMF supports the overall objective of promoting the uptake of trustworthy and lawful AI across the Single Market.

We however draw attention to the need for a robust impact assessment to be carried out in order to avoid two main shortcomings. Possible future regulatory measures should not lead to over-regulation, or incoherence with existing regulations.

In our view, the current product safety legislation is broadly fit for purpose, sufficiently covering AI applications. Therefore, it does not need to be revised to integrate additional  requirements on AI. What would be instead preferable is to adopt a horizontal AI legislation and preserve the principles of the New Legislative Framework.

Finally, EGMF preferred policy options are either the status quo or ‘soft/non-legislative law’, based on industry-led initiatives, such as the development of standards/codes of conduct.
