EGMF calls for an extension to the CBAM application date

EGMF is calling for a 24‑month extension to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) application date—to ensure companies have time to adapt to the requirements and European competitiveness is protected.

CBAM is a major step for decarbonisation—but getting it right requires a realistic timeline.

We urge EU decision-makers to consider the practical implications of the current timeline and the significant technical and economic challenges manufacturers face if implementation proceeds without sufficient preparation time.

With the current application date, manufacturers are already facing:

  • Limited access to reliable, consistent emissions data across increasingly complex, global supply chains.
  • High implementation complexity, compounded by the absence of fully standardised CO₂ calculation methodologies.
  • Material cost impacts (up to +20% for raw materials, ~+5% for cast iron semi-finished products, and up to +7% on final price lists), plus additional administrative and organisational burden.
